Kevin Nkoane primary school’s girls’ soccer team has been making waves in the local football scene.

In fact, the introduction of girls’ football at Kevin Nkoane Primary School has brought about a transformation that is both overdue and remarkable. The school had not fielded soccer teams since 1959, making this resurgence all the more extraordinary.

Recently, the team clinched victory at the Sol Plaatje Local Football School Structure, with the Under-14s sealing their success as overall winners and then the same team followed up that triumph by playing in the Under-15s division and claiming victory at the FNB Festival.

A noteworthy aspect of this accomplishment is the emergence of the girls’ team which was initiated just last year but has already achieved remarkable results. The team captured the Sol Plaatje Girls League 2022 title and has continued to dominate various competitions.

What sets this achievement apart is the fact that most of these girls had never played football before, making their triumph even more inspiring.

The recent tournament victories have further bolstered the team’s confidence. The FNB Festival Tournament showcased their prowess, with results including a 1-0 victory against Technical High in the group stage and a resounding 2-0 win against Sol Plaatje Primary in the finals.

The team’s impressive journey continued with emphatic wins in the Kay Motsepe tournament, including a dominant 9-0 victory over Pescodia Primary and an absolute hammering 11-0 of Emang Mmogo High.

In the semi-finals, Kevin Nkoane secured a 2-0 victory over Homevale High, leading them to the finals against Rietvale High. The team proved their mettle once again, emerging victorious with a 3-1 scoreline.

Coach Mbulelo Jack, a driving force behind this success, emphasised the journey the girls have undertaken. “It’s been a good work in progress for these girls, who had no prior experience in football. They’ve shown incredible commitment and determination, which is truly commendable,” Jack told the DFA.

Among the players on the team, only three are affiliated with local clubs, among them Bolla Madukenela who is playing at Diamond Ladies Football Club locally, while Bella Madukenel is contributing her skills to Golden Junior City FC. The other player is Mpumelelo Moncho. These players’ achievements serve as a testament to the growth of the women’s game in the region.

Coach Jack, who serves as an employee at Kevin Nkoane Primary School and also holds the position of coach and chairman at the Diamond Ladies Club, has been pivotal in driving the advancement of women’s football. “It’s my calling to coach and promote women’s football in the province,” coach Jack stated, underscoring his commitment to the cause.

The girls’ team’s success is not just confined to the field; it also serves as a source of inspiration for aspiring female athletes at other schools. The recent performance of the Banyana Banyana team during the World Cup has further fueled their motivation to excel in the sport.

Meanwhile, as the district knockout games scheduled for Friday approaches the anticipation is palpable. The games at Vaal Rivier Combined (Barkly West), are set to kick off at 9am, promising another exciting chapter in the inspiring journey of Kevin Nkoane primary school’s football teams.

Acknowledging the support received, coach Jack expressed gratitude to the school’s acting principal, Mr. Samuels, for his unwavering backing since day one. With dreams of going national and making history, the girls are eager to continue their journey and bring pride to their province.
