Organisers of the Hockey Junction Junior Cup, a newly-launched junior outdoor competition in Kimberley have provisionally pencilled-in the end of the year and beginning of the January 2021 to kickstart the newly-founded four-team youth tournament which will cater for local youngsters as well as some from Bloemfontein and nearby towns.

The four-team tournament concept was created by founders Allistair Fredericks, Reza Rosenberg and Melrick Maddocks, with the tournament catering for both boys and girls from 14 to 19 years of age.

The tournament founders released a statement explaining that the focus of the competition was mainly to create a top class junior hockey event that will in turn develop a high-performance pipeline and recruitment pathway for junior players in the Northern Cape and Free State.

Opportunity

The HJ Junior Cup will provide participants with an opportunity to take part in high-performance events through competitive games and for the development of future stars in the region as they will be competing against the best.

The competition will start off with a round-robin section, followed by play-offs and the final where the winning team will be crowned the inaugural HJ Junior Cup champions.

Presently there is a strong possibility that three teams from Kimberley will participate in the inaugural event. These teams are Diamond Tigers, Turf War Bulldogs, Homevale Super Cubs; they will be joined by Bloem Hawks from the Free State.

The organisers made assurances that the anticipated tournament will not clash with any existing tournaments due to the fact that the competition itself will take place at the year’s change-over.

Currently, as can be expected, the tournament organisers are sitting out the Covid-19 situation, awaiting word from the authorities as to when they will be able to return to the playing fields.
