Dames has been appointed as the general manager of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union.
Jaco Dames, a man of immense skill, talent, and vision, has been appointed as the general manager of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union (BBRU).
This marks an exciting new chapter for the seasoned coach, who transitions from his role as head coach at Diamantveld High School to take on an administrative position with one of South Africa’s most prestigious rugby unions.
Dames’ journey is a testament to his dedication to the sport. His contributions to amateur rugby as a coach, manager, and administrator have left an indelible mark, and his new appointment has been met with high praise.
He will add value
“He brings with him a lot of expertise and experience as a coach, manager, and administrator,” said Willem Strauss, president of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union. “I don’t doubt that he will add value to the BBRU brand, values, and standards.”
Strauss highlighted Dames’ impressive understanding of the challenges facing amateur rugby. “During the interview process to select a new GM, Dames impressed with his thorough understanding of the challenges amateur rugby faces, from senior clubs to schools, and his appreciation of the important leadership role the BBRU plays in South African amateur rugby.
“An incredible array of intellectual property comes with him.”
For Dames, the appointment feels like coming home. “My blood has always been blue, and I could not have hoped for a more appropriate opportunity to end my coaching career and move into administration at the BBRU,” he said. “It was high time to make this switch. My dad played for Northern Transvaal between 1970 and 1973, and there was never any doubt about what team I would be supporting to this day. I am super excited about the new challenge awaiting me.”
High praise from all quarters
Dames’ passion for rugby is evident, and his track record of success has earned him admiration from colleagues and peers alike.
Principals from schools where he served as Director of Rugby or Head of Sport, along with figures like SA Rugby’s Nico Serfontein, have described him as: “Outstanding in his field of expertise”, “A highly professional employee”, “An ‘outside-the-box’ thinker and doer”, “Possessing work ethics that make him an asset to any employer” and “Exceptional in planning and organisation”.
Meanwhile, he has also been applauded as: “Extremely passionate and committed to rugby and his work”, “Adaptable and effective under pressure”, “Innovative, enthusiastic, and creative”, “One of the few who truly understands the industry”, and “A visionary who appreciates the bigger picture”.
While others have described Dames as “Humble, hard-working, and willing to learn” and “Always part of the solution rather than the problem”.
Bittersweet goodbye
Dames’ departure from Diamantveld High School marks the end of an era for the Kimberley-based institution, where his leadership and expertise played a pivotal role in elevating their rugby programme. However, his move to the BBRU is widely seen as a step forward for both him and the union.
With his strong foundation in amateur rugby, Dames is uniquely positioned to address the challenges faced by schools and clubs while furthering the BBRU’s legacy of excellence. As the new general, he is set to make an impact not only on the union but also on South African rugby as a whole.
As the Blue Bulls Rugby Union welcomes Dames into their fold, the excitement is palpable. With his unwavering passion, exceptional skill set, and forward-thinking approach, the future of the BBRU is looking bright.
