THIS past weekend, the Intervaal sub-district hosted 12 of the best men’s and women’s bowlers from the area who competed in one-on-one battles for the coveted 2022 Masters crown.

According to Jacques Swanepoel, Intervaal sub-district representative, Intervaal – which forms one of the four bowls sub districts in the Northern Cape – consists of Warrenton Bowls Club, Hartswater Bowls Club, Vryburg Bowls Club, Schweizer-Reneke Bowls Club, Bloemhof Bowls Club, Christiana Bowls Club and Hertzogville Bowls Club.

The clubs were all represented in this prestigious tournament which took place over the weekend of October 15-16 in the Hartsvalley area.

Swanepoel said only Hartswater and Vryburg are able to host this tournament since they have the required two greens that are needed to accommodate the number of games played in competitive tournaments: “This year the honour of hosting was given to Hartswater Bowls Club, who truly were wonderful hosts,” he said.

After two days and five rounds of play followed by the finals, the following players were able to outplay and outlass their opponents: Danie Koekemoer (Hartswater Bowls Club) beat Wihan Smit (Bloemhof Bowls Club) and as a result, Koekemoer took the Men’s bowls title.

Meanwhile, Chrizaan Visser of Bloemhof Bowls Club, beat Chrissie van Niekerk of Hartswater Bowls Club and went on to take the Women’s title. “It is important to remember that in singles play there is no limit on ends and the winner is determined by which player can reach the score of 21 first,” Swanepoel said.

Swanepoel, who also handles the association’s marketing effort, invited enquiries from people interested in the game.

“If you feel that you would like to try out the sport of bowls in any of these clubs and maybe become the next master of Intervaal bowls why not contact Intervaal Membership Marketing convenor Robben Chaamano on 064-700-9866 via WhatsApp or follow him on Facebook or Instagram under handle ‘The Native Bowler’, he remarked.
