Indoor hockey is set to take Kimberley by storm as Kimberley-born national Men’s Olympic hockey player Alistair Fredericks prepares to launch an indoor league for junior players, both boys and girls, in August or September.

According to a press release by the sponsors the league will be managed by current national hockey team player Melrick Maddocks. The launch will take place at the Jim Summers Hall with the specific date still to be announced. The new league will run over six weeks.

Fredericks has been granted the franchise rights to run what will be called the Kimberly Heats indoor league. He is looking forward to running the anticipated league with the same success he has had with his current Gauteng-based club, the PSI Gauteng Gryphons.

According to indoor hockey league founder Simon Martin the game has grown in South Africa. Martin has turned the indoor league game into one of the fastest growing sports in the country.

More than 2000 school-aged children ordinarily attend the PSI national champions which are held in Cape Town annually.

Schools and private clubs can enter themselves or juvenile candidates can enter their own teams.

Fredericks will also be hosting an indoor hockey coaching clinic on August 9 at the Jim Summers Hall.

An urgent call was made to parents to bring their children to the coaching clinic for guidance from the former national player.

Fredericks will be assisted by current SA players from Kimberley, Reeza Rozenburg and Maddocks.

Sponsors’ spokesperson Rosenberg said: “The coaches would love to give back to the future hockey players from the Diamond city.”

The trials for the Kimberley Heats franchise players who will participate in the PSI national championships to be held in Cape Town this year will also take place at the Jim Summers Hall.

Dates for Trials:

Monday, September 17 (7.45pm): Under-13 and Under-14 Girls.

Tuesday, September 18 (6.30pm): Under-16 Boys and Girls.

Wednesday, September 19 (6.30pm): Under-13 and Under-14 Boys.
