TEEMANENG Running Club has revived the much put-off annual memorial Phakamile Mabija half marathon by staging the event as a hybrid physical and virtual race to be held on March 21 starting from Kimberley Technical High School.

Jerry Kale, the public relations coordinator for the event simply said: “We are here again”. Kale was referring to the return of the much touted race which was supposed to have taken place about two years ago.

It was stopped in its tracks by the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

The race organisers explained that the race was to honour the late anti-apartheid stalwart Phakamile Mabija who died tragically in police detention 1977.

On Friday Kale emphasised that all interested participants must register online as the organisers will not accept manual entries. They will also not accept entries delivered on the day of the race itself.

The memorial race will feature running categories as follows: 5km, 10km and 21km virtual events. The physical races will also be in the same categories. The usual Athletics South Africa rules regarding eligible athletes will apply as well as the applicable fees will apply, Kale said.

He said that Teemaneng Running Club has all the relevant details regarding all aspects of the race including the route available on their website.
