In the first leg of the competition, earlier in the season, the two teams ended the match with the score in a 2-all tie.

Local football fans, an estimated 2000 of them, if this reporter counted correctly, were treated to a great game of soccer when the Sol Plaatje Local Football Association Masters League final took place at the AR Abass Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The two teams that faced-off against each other were Greenpoint Young Pirates and Aztec from Blikkiesdorp.

For the very first time in their existence, Greenpoint Young Pirates took the trophy, beating their opponents 2-1 after the score was locked at 1 all at half-time.

Final nail

The goal-scorers for the hosts were Johannes van Schalkwyk and Winston Assegaai, who put the final nail in the coffin with a well-taken penalty, while Frank Matah scored Aztec’s only goal.

In the first leg of the competition, earlier in the season, the two teams ended the match with the score in a 2-all tie.

During last season’s finale, Young Pirates were beaten 3-2 by Diamond Boys, while Aztec lost 4-2 to Diamond Boys in the final of the Sol Plaatje League.

During the previous year, back in 2017, Aztec would count themselves unlucky when they lost to Juventus in the Easter tournament.

Meanwhile, results from matches played in the Rehana Moshoeshoe Cup played over the weekend are:

Saints 5-4 Macarena

Juventus 4-2 Meteors

Sunshine 1-5 Diamond Boys,

Phutanang 3-1 Roodepan

Rhodesian Sweepers 3-5 Zulu Sweepers.
