THE FREE State XV Under-16 side brought down the curtain on a thrilling Grant Khomo Week, beating the Sharks 37-18 in the final match of the tournament played at Kimberley’s Windhoek Draught Park on Wednesday.

The Free State youngsters had taken the match by the scruff of the neck early on in the first quarter of the match with an early 15-6 lead and from that point never looked back.

By the time the halftime break came around Free State had established a commanding nine-point lead.

Free State returned to the park after the break and set about relentlessly rushing the Sharks chalk line, edging ahead with a penalty kick.

Free State XV scrumhalf Phillip McLaren added another try to his side’s tally but the try was not converted. However, three of his teammates also came to the points festival and stretched their tally before the Sharks got on the board through a try of their own.

The last assault on the tryline belonged to Free State as they upped the tempo a notch with a penalty kick in the last minute of the final game and silenced the hooter at 37-18.
