IN THEIR first ever participation in the SAPS National Rugby Week, the Northern Cape women’s team blew away their opposition on Day 2 of the tournament by annihilating their Gauteng opponents 34-0.
The NC women scored six tries but only managed two conversion, after going to the half-time break with a comfortable 19-0 lead.
The NC team played an exciting brand of rugby, running the ball and taking their chances, then finding the gaps and making excellent use of their ball possession.
Despite the scoreline the women from Gauteng did not totally embarrass themselves and come close to the NC tryline on a number of occasions. However, their basics, such as holding onto the ball, that let them down resulting in numerous knock-ons during their attacks.
Meanwhile, the NC SAPS men’s team also had the better of their opponents from the Eastern Cape in their fixture staged at Tafel Lager Park. NC eventually won the match 51-26 after leading 20-7 at half-time.
The NC team’s performance was all the more impressive when one considers that this is the first match this team has played together as the players come from the whole of the Province, from Calvinia in the south to Springbok and Alexander Bay in the north-west.
Although the NC players made far too many basic errors, such as forward passes, knock ons and umpteen missed tackles, they still delighted the spectators with their style of running and expansive play.
The Eastern Cape team never gave up, themselves playing a hard game and they did give NC a bit of a scare in the final 15 minutes, coming back and getting within 11 points of the hosts after running a number of late tries. But in the end, NC ended the match with two quick tries before the final whistle was blown.
