FORMER Proteas cricket players will grace the Northern Cape Cricket (NCC) union’s gala dinner next Thursday (August 11) in Kimberley, where they will also be part of a golf day and an auction of exotic items belonging to former star players.

NCC CEO Tebogo January confirmed on Tuesday that the arrangements for the gala dinner, golf day and auction were advanced.

Former Proteas player Alviro Petersen is confirmed as among the topline ex-players who will be at the event.

Some of the other VIP guests include former Proteas player and captain Ashwell Prince as well as former Proteas master blaster Loots Bosman and former fast bowler and current Cricket SA convenor Victor Mpitsang.

January said the NCC has invited a slew of former national team players, some of whom have confirmed their willingness to be part of the NCC itinerary. The union is still awaiting more responses from invitees to consent to be part of the event.

“We await more confirmations and as soon as those become available, hopefully later in the week, we will inform you accordingly.

“Technically we will have a golf day on the 12th of August. The day before that, we will have our gala dinner, otherwise named the “Manne Aand”.

January explained further: “The plan is to have prominent sports and business persons in the room. We are trying to raise funds as the company. As matters stand we already have a number of sponsors on board, as is evidenced by the names on our flyers issued for this event. We want to get the right persons in the room as we are going to auction items from former Proteas players.

We are also going to auction off former Proteas players to the various teams that will take part in the golf day. So if you want one of the prominent players in your team, you will bid for the services of that player.”

The NCC’s crop of corporate sponsors to the event include: MVD Kalahari, House 75A, Itec, Northern Cape Heat, Northern Cape Tourism, Standard Bank, Cell C and Mercedes Benz.

January said they have a number of playing shirts from players who are currently doing duty in the Proteas such as Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram.

“These items are playing shirts the guys used to wear when they were playing in the IPL (Indian Premier League). They are signed T-shirts. We’re looking at auctioning those off as well. These are nice items to have as a collector. We also await more items which Cricket South Africa is going to send to us to use at the auction.”

The gala dinner will be hosted at the Country Club in Cassandra, Kimberley.
