The local athletics fraternity is ecstatic that minor repairs at the De Beers athletics track have finally taken off with the Sol Plaatje Council’s appointment of SA based sports surface firm CK Industries.

An excited Athletics SA and Griqualand West Athletics coach Pastor Theo Senekal senior this week invited the DFA to witness the start of the repairs to the track surface at the De Beers stadium.

Senekal had battled for a long time to get minor repairs done at the provincially accredited track.

Company representative Keith van Tonder said they have been contracted to do repairs to the track surface for a modest fee. They will do some of the work with help from local workers. The repairs will be completed in two months, he said.

The company has previously done work at the Kings Park stadium track which is adjacent to the Moses Mabhida stadium, including the University of Johannesburg stadium track as well as about a handful international contract work.
