The hockey landscape in Kimberley is experiencing an upswing with several highlights on the calendar and a good run by one of the local teams at a recent Inter-Provincial tournament.

Two Northern Cape Senior Men’s Hockey teams participated in the recent 2018 edition of the Senior Inter-Provincial Tournament in Pietermaritzburg.

Things went especially well for the NC B-team who ended up claiming gold and being crowned the Champions of B-section.

The Northern Cape side ended at the top of their pool and faced SACD in the final winning the game 3-2.

The B-team’s pool results were as follows:

Northern Daisies 3-4 Northern Cape

Mpumalanga 2-4 Northern Cape

Northern Cape 4-8 SACD

KZN Inland 2-7 Northern Cape

Northern Cape A 2-18 Northern Cape B

Meanwhile, something to look forward to for local hockey enthusiasts is that Kimberley-born former national hockey coach and player Alistair Fredericks and current Men’s national players Reza Rosenberg and Melrick Maddocks will tomorrow host a free training session at the Jim Summers Hall in Schmidtsdrift Road.

Parents have been invited to bring their hockey-loving children to this free session which starts at noon at the main centre inside the Jim Summers Hall. The coaches will provide indoor training sticks.

According to a press release issued earlier by the organisers, an indoor league for junior players (boys and girls) will be launched next month, and the organisers have been granted the franchise rights to run the Kimberly Heats Indoor League.

According to indoor hockey league founder Simon Martin the game has grown in South Africa. Martin has turned the indoor game into one of the fastest growing sports in the country.

Yesterday Fredericks said an exhibition game by current national players will be staged at the Jim Summers Hall tomorrow after the clinics.
