DIAMOND Ladies Football Club (DLFC) are impatient for the Covid-19 imposed stoppage of the local league to be lifted in time for their entry to the senior Sasol Women’s League to which they gained promotion in the last season.

DLFC chairman Mbulelo Jack said the 2019 Frances Baard Regional Women’s League champions had up until this past weekend been engaged in playing off-season games against all types of opponents since the official games were stopped due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We started training when Covid-19 level 1 was introduced on September 1 this year. We were supposed to have started playing in the Sasol League in April as per the Safa Sasol Women’s League schedule. But the league never started.”

Jack said they chose to play pre-season games in anticipation of the league restart which could be anytime soon. The club was promoted to the Sasol Women’s League in November last year but had since April this year not kicked a ball in an official fixture.

Jack said: “The team morale is understandably high since that promotion as the ladies are motivated to play in the senior league. We could not play official games for five months. But since September 21 this year, Safa allowed us to play pre-season games in anticipation of the restart of the season, especially the senior Sasol League”.

Jack said the Kutlwanong township team (Club 2000) has of late experienced a spurt in interest shown by young girls who are keen to join the team. The club has made use of social media such as Facebook to invite interested persons to their practice sessions which are held at the Vuyolwethu High school grounds in Ipeleng, Galeshewe. The full weekly practice schedule has been published on its Facebook page. The practice sessions start on Tuesday, November 17 and will end on December 2.

Jack said this kind of interest in the club was exceptional and had not been in evidence since their inception in 2013.

“The club is growing. We plan to have a senior and a junior stream starting in January next year,” he said.
