IN THE run up to the Diamantveld T20 Cricket Festival, Kuruman’s Kalahari High School cricket captain, Malan Lubbe, spoke to the DFA and expressed his confidence as he outlined his team’s strategic approach ahead of their participation in the prestigious cricket tournament.
Reflecting on the team’s training, Lubbe told the DFA that the Kalahari team enjoyed some good preparation for the tournament.
“As a team, we’ve had an extensive pre-season, playing several T20 matches to simulate high-pressure situations, similar to those we’ll face,” Lubbe said.
The captain was under no illusion about the challenges that could arise and emphasised the importance of adapting to match conditions: “I assess the situation we’re in and make sure to place the right players in those specific roles to control the outcome,” he said.
“It’s also critical that I trust and fully back my players, helping them realise their potential,” the captain added.
Looking ahead to the challenging pool, which includes powerhouses like Grey College and Oakdale, Lubbe remains optimistic. “We know it won’t be easy, but we’re aware there’s always the possibility of causing an upset. We’d be happy to compete in the middle stages toward the end of the tournament.”
Having played at the venue last year, Lubbe believes this familiarity of the conditions will give his team an advantage: “We’re fortunate to know the conditions well, having played there before during most of our cricket journey.”
He also highlighted the significance of the tournament for showcasing talent saying, “It’s a great opportunity to show the country what our school is capable of. This is a big platform to identify schoolboy cricket talent at the highest level and to further promote Northern Cape Cricket.”
Meanwhile, the Kalahari High School head coach Maritz Lubbe told the DFA of how many of his players gained valuable match experience during the Jaru Sports Academy’s tournament held over the July holidays.
With disciplined bowling at the forefront of their strategy, the coach emphasised, the team is well-prepared for the challenges of T20 cricket, where tight bowling is crucial.
The coaching staff has placed significant emphasis on training regimes that ensure bowlers consistently hit the right lengths, while the batting unit is focused on capitalising on key moments during their 120+ balls. The ability to control important phases of play is vital in the T20 format, and Kalahari’s players have been drilled to perform under pressure.
The coach says that the team’s main objective for the tournament is to give players the opportunity to express themselves and showcase their cricketing abilities. While the squad is familiar with Kimberley’s playing conditions, adaptability remains key, and the players are being prepared both mentally and physically for the competition.
For Kalahari High School, participating in a tournament of this calibre is a major achievement. It offers the boys the chance to compete against some of the country’s strongest cricketing schools, an opportunity not often available to a rural school like theirs.
Beyond the competition, this experience brings hope and purpose to young cricketers in the Kuruman community, inspiring them to work hard with the dream of one day representing the Kalahari Eagles at the Diamantveld T20 tournament.
