Home team, Colville United, got out of jail with a 1-all draw against log leaders Hungry Lions FC in a regular ABC Motsepe league fixture at the AR Abass Stadium in Kimberley on Saturday afternoon.

The half-time score was goalless. The game started out on a very pedestrian pace much to the disappointment of the many spectators out on the grandstand who had to endure the quiet opening period. The match referee had a busy day in the middle of the park, handing out several cautionary cards for foul play and simple lack of sportsmanship on the part of some of the players. Yet, despite this frequent card flashing there were many more incidents which the middleman let slide which were deserving of sanction.

Colville had plenty of opportunities to hit the back of their opponent’s net but woeful finishing saw many of those chances go begging. Hungry Lions, for their part, were quite busy in their hosts’ danger area. Lions got several chances to bury clear chances but these too were left unattended with the result that the break arrived with no points on either team’s score sheet.

At the break, both sides made substitutions to their line-ups in a clear bid to improve their marksmanship upfront. Hungry Lions were first to find the mark. Former professional Bloemfontein Celtics midfield player Moses Spandeel pushed a pass across court from the left where Jason Arendse collected and sent a blistering shot into the United goal (1-0).

United launched a desperate effort in retaliation and strung several passes together which saw them finish up dead at the Lions goal area. But then former Cameroon FC player Shawn Goliath turned beautifully on a pass inside the Lions big box and netted for Colville to secure the point. – Giddy van Rooyen
