New University Sports of South Africa (USSA) inductee Kimberley’s Sol Plaatje University (SPU) returned with a bronze medal from the recent university athletics games which were held in Sasolburg, in the Free State last week.

This puts Sol Plaatje on joint 12th position alongside fellow single medal holders University of Johannesburg, Walter Sisulu University and Bloemfontein’s Central University of Technology who all bagged a single bronze.

University of North West in Potchefstroom tops the 14 university member medal standings with 13 gold and 13 silver medals including seven bronze medals.

SPU’s coach Gys Smit confirmed that Terri-ann Crowie’s throw in the region of 30 metres in the javelin event secured bronze.

Crowie also made it to fifth place in the shot put while Jared Clegg, who also participated in the shot put and discus for men, placed seventh in the finals of both events.

Several Sol Plaatje University athletes also took part in track and field events but also failed to secure podium positions.
