The 2025 Lupus Aerobics Fund-raiser, set to be hosted by BLADE Health and Wellness on March 29 in Kimberley, promises a day of fitness and solidarity to raise awareness and support for those battling lupus, a misunderstood and unpredictable autoimmune disease that affects millions worldwide.
KIMBERLEY will come alive on March 29 when the 2025 Lupus Aerobics Fund-raiser brings together the community for a day of movement, awareness and solidarity.
Hosted by BLADE Health and Wellness, this event is more than just a fitness session – it’s a rallying cry to support those battling lupus, a misunderstood and unpredictable autoimmune disease that affects millions worldwide.
Lupus is a complex autoimmune condition that can wreak havoc on various organs and tissues, including the skin, joints, heart and kidneys. Its symptoms are severe, unpredictable, and often invisible to the outside world, making it a challenging disease to diagnose, live with, and treat.
While researchers worldwide are delving into its origins and risk patterns, the reality is that anyone can be affected. Raising awareness is vital in fostering understanding and providing much-needed support for lupus warriors.
The fund-raiser will take place at Boitshoko Primary School in Kimberley from 8am to 5pm on March 29. The highlight of the event will be a step aerobics session led by Tumi Mekgwe, an aerobics instructor who was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) in 2024. Participants will don purple and white T-shirts as a symbol of unity and support for those living with lupus.
Event attendees can also visit the Lupus Warriors Stall to learn more about the disease and hear first-hand accounts from those affected. Early bird tickets are available for R250, while door tickets are R300. Teams can register for R600.
A Personal Journey: Tumi Mekgwe’s Story
Tumi Mekgwe’s journey with lupus began in mid-2024 when she was diagnosed with SLE. Although initially asymptomatic, she soon began experiencing joint pain in her legs, a frightening and unfamiliar challenge.
As an aerobics instructor, Tumi found strength and purpose in using her platform to raise awareness. “It’s important for people to understand that just because symptoms aren’t visible, it doesn’t mean lupus isn’t life-altering,” she shared.
Her participation in the 2025 Lupus Aerobics Fund-raiser is deeply personal. “This initiative allows people to learn more about lupus and its impact. It’s also a chance for me to connect with other lupus warriors and share our experiences.”
For Vuyo Blade Thati, owner of BLADE Health and Wellness, the event’s purpose extends beyond fitness. “I know several lupus warriors and supporters in our industry. This is a way to bring visibility to their struggles and ensure they don’t feel alone,” he said..
Tumi echoes this sentiment, emphasising the importance of awareness: “Creating visibility helps others understand that lupus is more than just physical pain; it can also take an emotional and mental toll.”
A Call to Action
As the 2025 Lupus Aerobics Fund-raiser approaches, Kimberley residents are encouraged to join the event and take a stand for lupus warriors. Funds raised will provide crucial support for those without medical aid, ensuring they can access the medication and care they need.
Tumi offers a heartfelt message to others living with lupus: “It’s not the end of the world. There is support and education available to help us navigate this journey. Take each day as it comes, and remember – you’re not alone.”
