ABC Motsepe League poised for restart

The league will restart on Saturday.

The ABC Motsepe League, Safa’s most senior organised football conference in the Northern Cape, will kick into action on Saturday, January 11 to restart part of the first half fixtures which were paused as a result of the recent festive holidays.

Safa provincial secretary Willem Coetzee this week re-issued an earlier notice of the league’s fixtures which had in any case been sent around to all stakeholders just before the league paused for the festive season.

By then a total of 11 matches had been completed by a good majority of the clubs in the 16-team league. Only four teams had by then played 10 games before the Christmas break. These were league stalwarts Hungry Lions, Tsantsabane Stars, Kakamas Juventus and Maruping United.

This was also the first time in a decade that the former dual-stream league had been reformulated back into a single stream conference.

There are a number of oddities in the current 2019/20 league standings. As things stand, the darling of the upper league namely United Rovers languishes at the bottom half of the log at number 15.

This is the result of a drastic slump in form despite the De Aar team having held on to most of its tried and tested playing squad including the technical team. This is apart from the fact too that United have thus far easily pocked something in the region of over R300 000 in league cup takings from its praiseworthy showing in the Nedbank Cup competition over the past three years.

United with eight points is joined by another relatively well-resourced side, Magareng Young Stars, in the bottom feeder stakes. Young Stars who also have eight points sit a nudge above United courtesy of a superior goal-difference of -8 (7 goals for, 15 against) while the De Aar side are at -12 (10 goals for, 22 against).

The league kicks off with eight matches of which the AR Abass Stadium will stage one featuring NC Liverpool against Rasta Fa Eagles at 5pm on Saturday January 11.
