Patriotic Alliance (PA) Deputy President Kenny Kunene has resigned from his position as a Proportional Representation Councillor and as a Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport in the City of Johannesburg.
His resignation follows public scrutiny over his association with an alleged member of a murder syndicate, a matter now under investigation by the party.
Kunene stated in his resignation letter, “I regret to inform you that I have tendered my resignation as a Proportional Representation Councillor for the Patriotic Alliance, effective immediately, and will thus be unable to continue as a member of your mayoral committee, responsible for transport.”
He added, “I am stepping aside from public life, for a period, while my party satisfies itself as to certain allegations that have been raised against me, which are unfounded, but I have nevertheless agreed it would be in the public interest for me to await the clearing of my name before considering a return to public service and duty.”
In a statement issued by PA President Gayton McKenzie, it was confirmed that Kunene would not be fulfilling any official role in the party while the investigation is ongoing.
“As a result, he has agreed to cooperate with an investigation, which will be led by a competent legal team. Until such time as he is fully cleared, he has agreed to step aside from his political role in the PA, and he will therefore not act and work in any official capacity in the party while on suspension.”
McKenzie further instructed that “the appointment of the investigators has already begun, which will be finalised through your office,” and urged the party faithful to remain resolute.
“I trust that you and all the patriots will join me in remaining steadfast during this challenging period.”
Reflecting on his tenure, Kunene expressed pride in his contributions.
“I believe I have always committed myself to serve the residents of Johannesburg with vigour, authenticity, and vision. During my two years as an MMC, I worked to be force for good, championing accessible transport, confronting inefficiencies, and challenging systemic rot within our institutions.”
Despite his resignation, Kunene reaffirmed his commitment to the party’s broader mission.
“I remain a loyal patriot towards our broader political mission and will remain dedicated to the upliftment of our communities.”
