Durban – Thabani Mzolo, the man accused of gunning down his ex-girlfriend earlier this month, has been remanded in custody for seven days while his new legal representation gets up to speed on the case.

He was initially represented by Legal Aid.

Mzolo, dressed in a blue suit, was escorted from the holding cells below the court to the dock by heavily armed police officials. More police officers, carrying R5-rifles were also stationed outside court.

The court heard that Mzolo had supplied two addresses, one in uMhlanga and another in Estcourt. However, he did not reside at either.

He is due back in court next week. His bail application is also to be considered at his next appearance.

On May 1, Mzolo allegedly shot his former girlfriend, Zolile Khumalo at the Lonsdale Residence in the Durban CBD.  She was a first year quantity surveyor student.

Outside the court, students gathered to show their support for the no bail stance adopted by the State.

They were addressed by various officials including ANC Women’s League president, Bathabile Dlamini.

Zolile Khumalo’s aunt, Bongiwe Myeni, addressed media outside the court and thanked supporters.
