A 27-year-old drunk driver was arrested on Sunday morning after he rammed into five people, killing a baby and injuring four others.

The horrific accident was caught on a nearby traffic camera in Stock Road between Rochester and Govan Mbeki roads in Philippi.

The footage shows a car standing on the side of the road in the yellow line with the passenger doors open.

The car is similar to the local cabs that transport people around Philippi, instead of the usual taxi or Avanza. A man stands behind the car while two other people are loading items from a trolley into the car on the passenger side.

Moments later the speeding Avanza suddenly veers off the road, crashing into the passengers and the people loading the trolley.

The drunk driver also crashed into three other cars that were also parked on the side of the road. Two other pedestrians got a massive fright when they narrowly escaped the collision and walked off unharmed.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed that the driver was arrested.

“A 27-year-old man was arrested for culpable homicide and drunken driving after his vehicle collided into other vehicles and a baby was fatally injured while four pedestrians were seriously injured. The accident occurred in Stock road, Philippi-East yesterday (Sunday) morning. The suspect will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court once charged.”
