The SA Transport and Allied Workers’ Union said it believes that Transnet is on its knees because of corruption and lack of accountability.
THE SOUTH African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) said they have noted the arrest of former Transnet officials including former chief executive Brian Molefe and former chief financial officer Anoj Singh.
Satawu said Molefe and his co-accused are facing serious charges of money laundering, corruption, and fraud.
It said it had been very vocal about the corruption and maladministration that has been taking place at the entity for years now.
“The South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union, believes that Transnet is on its knees because of corruption and non-accountability.”
Satawu added that the recent arrests come after former board members and the former CEO of Transnet, Siyabonga Gama, being arrested for similar accusations.
“We have called for the board of management to be equally accountable for the paralysis and mismanagement in question. The new developments at Transnet are a good sign of upholding principles of good corporate governance within the entity. The organisation further calls for more arrests in line with the State Capture Commission Report by Chief Justice Zondo. However, we are saying this must not be used as a political attack to settle political factional battles.”
Satawu said that as a law-abiding union, they were of the view that the law must take its course and that the authorities must investigate these charges thoroughly and be given space to do so.
“The South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union will be closely monitoring the court proceedings going forward.”
