TWO DISTRICTS in the Northern Cape – Frances Baard and John Taolo Gaetsewe – are still in the process of placing pupils at schools.

The Northern Cape Department of Education said that all pupils in Grade 1 and Grade 8 in all districts have been placed.

Department spokesperson Geoffrey van der Merwe said the only challenge they experienced was with regard to the placement of Grade R pupils in the Frances Baard and JTG districts.

“All grade 1 and 8 learners in all districts had been placed. There are 12 learners from Independent Schools placed at Wrenchville High School in Kuruman, but these learners have not accepted the placement as they want to be placed at Kalahari High School. However, Kalahari High School is filled to capacity.

“There were also 22 unplaced Grade R learners in the Frances Baard district and 45 Grade R learners in the JTG district who were advised to seek placement at community-based sites since that grade is not yet a compulsory grade. The Grade R classes at schools are also currently full,” said Van der Merwe.

He added that there are some schools that are currently in the process of placing middle-grade pupils.

“The Frances Baard and JTG districts are still placing middle-grade learners that had visited the district offices seeking placement. These are learners whose parents have either transferred or relocated to the relevant districts or towns, and also parents who can no longer afford the fees at independent schools,” Van der Merwe said.
