Department of Basic Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga has confirmed that ANC member of parliament Timothy Khoza has died in a car accident near Paarl in the Western Cape on Wednesday morning.

In a statement Mhlanga said the MPs were travelling together to conduct school oversight visits in the Paarl area near Cape Town.

“En route they were involved in a crash where their vehicle overturned, killing one MP and leaving three others seriously injured.”

The three injured MPs have been identified as Nomalungela Gina of the ANC, the Democratic Alliance’s Ian Ollis and Cynthia Majeke of the United Democratic Movement.

In a WhatsApp message to African Independent Ollis said: “I’m ok … At hospital being checked out, thanks. Khoza died in the bus next to me.”

Legislature spokesperson Moloto Mothapo said that parliament has sent a delegation to the Paarl Mediclinic to ascertain the condition of the three injured MPs.
