The fuel price will increase by just 4.9 cents a litre, Energy Minister Jeff Radebe announced on Monday.

Radebe announcement comes after the Automobile Association (AA) last week said it expected an increase of between 23 and 25 cents a litre for petrol as a result of a weaker rand.

But, Radebe’s statement said government will absorb most of the increase.

“Despite the fact that these increases were caused mainly by international factors, the department has decided to intervene temporarily for this month. This is a once off temporary intervention to provide some relief to motorists and consumers against fuel price hikes.”

The 4.9 cents a litre increase was meant to cater for the annual salary adjustments of petrol attendants, cashiers and other admin staff.
