KZN teen arrested for 3-year-old’s murder also faces a rape charge

Durban – The boy, 15, arrested for the murder of three-year-old Sanelisiwe Mhlongo has now also been charged with rape.

The accused, who was known to the KwaMashu toddler, appeared in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday where the matter was adjourned until next week.

National Prosecutions Authority(NPA) spokesperson Natasha Kara said the accused had been placed in a place of safety.

“The accused faces a count of rape and murder. The matter has been remanded to 7 October for bail application,” she said.

The teen was arrested on Tuesday five days after the body of Sanelisiwe was found with multiple stab wounds and a head injury in a bush behind her house.

According to the family who had expressed shock at the arrest of a person known to the family, Sanelisiwe went missing last Wednesday.

Her aunt said they started searching for the toddler around midday until it was night, but she was not found.

She said her body was discovered early the next morning.

At the time of the discovery, it was alleged her body had been covered with clothes belonging to a relative.

Its alleged that two relatives, one of whom is the accused, was taken in for questioning and later released.

According to police, Sanelisiwe was left in the care of a relative while her mother went to work.

When her mother returned home, she was told her daughter had gone missing and was nowhere to be found.

They said last Thursday at 6am her body of was found in the bushes near her home on Vemvane Road at M Section.

She had sustained stab wounds to her body as well as a head injury.

When police arrested the teenager for the murder a weapon thought to have been used to commit the offence was recovered.
