RECENT heavy rains have caused significant disruptions in the Kruger National Park (KNP), prompting closures of some camps and gravel roads. While all entry gates remain operational, localised flooding, primarily south of the Olifants River, has resulted in damage to key roads, including sections between Skukuza and Lower Sabie.

The KNP Roads Management team responded swiftly to ensure the safety of road users, including tourists. However, forecasts predict sustained heavy water flows in the Sabie and Sand Rivers, potentially prolonging the disruptions.

In the Northern areas of the Park, the Luvuvhu River has reached its highest level of the season. Roads in the vicinity are under constant monitoring, and road users are urged to adhere strictly to closure notices.

The KNP Disaster Management Team has been activated to handle potential emergencies. Fortunately, no casualties or damage to personal property have been reported thus far. Visitors are reminded to exercise caution, particularly when crossing low-level bridges, and to avoid leaving their vehicles to clear debris. Instead, they should contact emergency personnel for assistance.

Visitors are encouraged to stay informed about road closures and alternative routes by checking in with rest camp receptions. Updates on road conditions, especially in the Park’s Southern regions, will be available online for those with internet access.

Tourists with confirmed bookings are advised to verify the accessibility of their accommodations by contacting the reservations team or the emergency call centre at 013 735 4325.

While the rains present challenges, the proactive measures and updates by the KNP team aim to prioritise safety while ensuring minimal disruption to visitor experiences.
