Health Minister Joe Phaahla has urged the public to take the Covid-19 vaccine ahead of the imminent fourth wave that could hit the country soon.
AS 24 MORE Covid-19 deaths were recorded, brining the total number of deaths in the country to 89,319, Health Minister Joe Phaahla urged the public to take the Covid-19 vaccine ahead of the imminent fourth wave that could hit the country soon.
“As of today (Saturday) the cumulative number of Covid-19 cases identified in South Africa is 2,923,751 with 358 new cases reported,” said the department.
Phaahla, speaking at the 2021 Rotary Health Family Day outreach programme in Pretoria West, said the virus is still in our midst and every day new Covid-19 cases are being recorded.
He further described vaccines as the only hope of long-term success in the fight against the coronavirus.
“While South Africa has sufficient stock to immunise citizens, the government is struggling to reach people,” Phaahla said.
He said he is hoping that the government will be able to make a breakthrough and that more people will take the jab.
“We have all learnt over the last 20 months that it is not over and there is going to be another resurgence of the infection and, therefore, we must be ready and protect everyone,” Phaahla said.
Last week the department said more than 23 million doses had been administered.
