Durban-  A father and his son are in recovering in hospital after they were shot during an alleged home robbery at Welbedacht East near Chatsworth on Sunday.

Captain Nqobile Gwala, KwaZulu Natal police spokesperson, said that the family were approached by men carrying firearms at their home in Nonzama Mandla Road.

“The suspects demanded cash from the family. Two family members were shot during the robbery and transported to R.K.Khan hospital. The suspects fled with television flat screens, cellular phones and cash,” she said.

The family declined to be interviewed. A neighbour said the house was ransacked and police detectives spent hours searching for clues.

Around about the same time in Chatsworth, Anton Chetty was shot dead in an alleged hijacking attempt. Chetty,27 was outside his friend Nolan Chetty,35, home on Silvermount Crescent. They were both seated in the car when a bakkie stopped behind them. They were not related but were friends. Anton also lived on the same road a few doors away.

Priscilla Chetty said her son Nolan got off to see who the occupants of the bakkie were. Before he could take a few steps men carrying guns rushed towards them. The men told Nolan to sit down on the floor and not to make a noise. He then heard two gunshots go off. He thought the men fired gunshots into the air. Chetty said it all happened so quickly.

The alleged hijackers fled without taking the car. Chetty said when her son looked into the car he became hysterical. He saw blood oozing from a head wound to Anton,” she said.

Anton, 27, died on the scene from two gunshot wounds.  Nolan was being treated in hospital for trauma.  Byron Chetty, Anton’s brother, said they took his firearm.

“I called him maybe an hour before it happened. He said he was on his way home and would be dropping off Nolan,”
Anton was employed by SBV to fill ATM machines with money.

“We still piecing together what had happened. We are still speculating whether it was a hijacking or not. Maybe they saw his gun and shot at him. He had plans to celebrate my mother’s birthday on Wednesday. The family are devasted by this tragic incident. We all feel like we have awoken from a bad dream. We knew he had a dangerous job but to be killed near our home is heartbreaking,” Byron said.
Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane, KwaZulu Natal police spokesperson said four suspects fled the scene in their white open bakkie after they failed to take Anton`s vehicle.

A case of murder, attempted murder and attempted hijacking was opened at Chatsworth police station.
