POWER utility Eskom was on Tuesday slammed from several quarters for failing to solve the 14-year-old load shedding problem in the country after it announced a Stage 4 of the controlled power outage.

Eskom said it regretfully found itself forced to implement stage 4 at 7.20am following trips at Majuba Unit 5 and Tutuka Unit 4.

According to the DA, Eskom should simply declare a state of disaster because its old generation fleet appeared to be on life support.

Covid-19 update platform @BitaSciComm said: “When we go to stage 4, millions of people cannot work and earn a living. More businesses will collapse and more people will lose their jobs.

“Eskom is one of the main reasons that 64% of South Africans live in poverty. We need a solution or otherwise in 2023, the unemployment rate will jump up further.”

EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu said Eskom had the most “incompetent bunch” of so-called executives who were evidently there to destabilise and ultimately destroy the utility in order to make space for private energy generation capitalist corporations.

Influencer Christo Thurston said the money invested in Eskom over the years could have supplied power to two countries the size of South Africa.

“Why does Eskom burn R250,000,000 worth of diesel in a day? It is one of the most expensive forms of energy.

“This needs serious forensic audits. To whom were diesel contracts awarded? The money burned on diesel could have built new power stations,” he vented.
