THE POLICE have confirmed that an EFF supporter fell to his death during the party’s 10th birthday celebrations at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened after a man apparently fell from level five to level two and died at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

The incident took place at around 4.30pm, after EFF leader Julius Malema delivered a roaring speech.

“It is alleged that the victim was dancing when he suddenly fell. The police have obtained statements from the witnesses,” Masondo said on Sunday.

EFF spokesperson Sinawo Tambo said the incident was reported to the police and it would be investigated.

He said the party would release a formal statement about the incident later on Sunday.

The EFF held a grand celebration that saw the 95,000-seater stadium filled to its capacity with many more supporters left continuing their celebrations outside.

The EFF added some of country’s hottest music artists to its 10th anniversary birthday celebration, bringing together over 40 local artists.

As the arena filled to capacity, party leadership urged those who were still making their way to the FNB Stadium to stay at home, as there was no space for them.

“Those who are still at home or thinking of coming here must stay at home. The stadium is now too full to accommodate more people. Those who can watch from home or at the shebeens, please follow the proceedings from there,” the party’s general secretary Marshall Dlamini announced just as the formalities started.
