Something for nothing

Don’t get me wrong, I know how difficult it is to find a job in the formal sector today and I do have sympathy for that

YOU CAN think that I am – and go ahead even call me – a bitter, callous old cow because I have absolutely no sympathy or an inkling of feeling any guilt for those who stand begging at the robots with their well-positioned placards – in your face!

Now you are probably wondering why I feel this way.

Have you actually read them? Most say, “Please help with food, money or clothes.” That’s it! Not, “Please help with food, money or clothes. Am prepared to do any work for the above.”

Why is it that people think that they are ‘entitled’ to just get a handout?

Yes, I understand that everybody is going through a crappy time because of the economy and as a result of those who have pilfered the state coffers and enriched themselves.

I know I am in the fortunate position to be able to take care of myself and have a job. But, I also know what it is like to be down and out, not knowing if you are even going to have a slice of bread to eat for supper.

Yet when I stop at a robot next to a fancy car, the driver of the ‘big car’ flips the switch to close their window and gives me the evil eye because I’m not giving the beggar any money.

Don’t get me wrong, I know how difficult it is to find a job in the formal sector today and I do have sympathy for that.

I also think that the government needs to step in and really make an effort with skills centres. It is all good and well to invest in the youth, but what about those who are no longer classified as youth?

They still have so much to contribute to society and the economy. Open up the sewing workshops, cooking workshops, anything that can be taught to those over the age of 35.

I can just imagine what it must feel like for those propping themselves up against a robot pole in the Kimberley heat.

Their pride and dignity at stake. For those I have all the sympathy in the world.

But, for those who just don’t feel like doing any kind of formal work and think it is their right to just be given a handout, I have no sympathy for you.

If I wasn’t renting and owned my own property and I saw you standing at the robot asking me for a job, I would create something for you so that you can earn what you deserve no matter how menial you might think the work is. No work is menial these days and if I’m jobless tomorrow and I’m forced into such a position, I would be willing to do absolutely anything – legal of course.

It doesn’t matter what it is, if you are hard-up will you do it.

Don’t expect everybody to just give and give because it is the so-called right thing to do.

Get off your butt – or step away from your robot pole – and actually do something to make you feel proud at the end of the day.

If I ever win the Lotto one day, I will buy a piece of ground where all those who really want to be taught a skill and invest in society and the economy can do so.

But, in the meantime we all need to come to the party and help where we can.

Don’t just expect the handout – stretch your hand out as well – then maybe I won’t be so heartless and callous.
