WHEN I think about travelling abroad, I find myself shrugging off the idea. Why spend a fortune exploring foreign lands when South Africa offers an unparalleled array of destinations waiting to be discovered? Our country is a treasure trove of natural beauty, cultural diversity, and hidden gems – many of which I’ve yet to explore.
For many years, Amanzimtoti, Margate, Uvongo and Durban were my go-to holiday destinations. I have fond memories of the warm Indian Ocean, the lively beachfront, and the unbeatable bunny chows. However, over the past few years, Durban’s high E coli levels have kept me away. While it’s disappointing to avoid a place so close to my heart, it’s also given me the perfect excuse to rediscover other parts of South Africa, especially along the Western Cape coast.
Take Mossel Bay, for example, a coastal gem that’s perfect for families and solo travellers alike. One of my favourite spots there is Santos Beach, a Blue Flag beach with calm waters and zero waves – an ideal setting for relaxation and family picnics. For those seeking more activity, Diaz Beach offers thrilling boogie boarding opportunities with its big waves. And let’s not forget Hartenbos, a hive of activity during the festive season, with its vibrant markets, lively entertainment, and welcoming atmosphere.
The Western Cape has quickly become my new favourite holiday region, and it’s not hard to see why.
The Western Cape feels like stepping into a different country – everything simply works. Potholes are no longer a daily frustration but a distant memory, as the province’s roads are smooth and well maintained. Unlike the patchy, hastily repaired roads we often see here in the Northern Cape, the Western Cape prioritises proper infrastructure. They understand the importance of consistently maintaining and expanding their roads, ensuring reliable basic services. This commitment not only enhances the experience for locals but also encourages travellers to return year after year, eager to spend their hard-earned money in a region that values excellence.
But South Africa isn’t just about coastal escapes. Head inland, and you’ll find places that feel like they belong in a fairy tale. God’s Window in Mpumalanga, for instance, offers a view so breathtaking it’s hard to put into words. Standing there, overlooking the endless expanse of green valleys and cliffs, you can’t help but feel a profound sense of connection to nature. It’s a reminder of why South Africa’s landscapes are among the most celebrated in the world.
We also have treasures like the Drakensberg Mountains, with their dramatic peaks and serene hiking trails. Or the Karoo, where you can gaze at night skies so clear they seem almost otherworldly. A perfect place for photographers to try their hand at long exposure photography. And let’s not overlook our world-famous game reserves, like Kruger National Park and Addo Elephant Park, where you can experience wildlife like nowhere else on Earth.
The beauty of South Africa lies not only in its landscapes but also in its accessibility. Travelling within our borders means fewer hassles with passports and visas and often more affordable trips. Beyond that, exploring our country is a way to support local economies, from small-town guest houses to family-run restaurants.
Of course, I’m not saying international travel isn’t worth it. There’s undoubtedly a wealth of culture and history to experience overseas. But for me, South Africa’s allure is irresistible. I’m content knowing that there are so many hidden gems here, waiting to be explored, from the well-known to the off-the-beaten-path destinations.
So, instead of booking a flight abroad, why not take a road trip through South Africa? Whether it’s a quiet beach in the Western Cape, a breathtaking view in Mpumalanga, or a starry night in the Karoo, there’s something here for everyone. I have no desire to trade that for distant horizons. South Africa’s beauty is enough to keep me enchanted for a lifetime.
