THE MAYIBUYE Dance Academy will host the ‘Dance Pages’ flagship dance festival at the Northern Cape Theatre from October 17 to 26.

Curator and director Letlhogonolo Nche said the annual event will showcase a diverse range of dance styles, with 100 young dancers from 10 organisations and companies participating.

He stated that featured performers this year included the Mayibuye Dance Academy, Moving Into Dance, Kwanele Finch Thusi, Lucky Dance Theatre, Amandla Danca Teatro, TVD Performing Arts Extravaganza, Ubuhle Development Foundation, Shane Pholoane, African Arts Agents, Kearabetswe Moroka, Norman Pisane, and many others.

“Its dedication to the arts and community development has made a significant impact on the lives of many young dancers in the Northern Cape,” said Nche. “One of the festival’s aims is to promote dance as one of the leading art forms. It provides a platform for dancers and choreographers to showcase their talents and bring the community together through the universal language of dance.”

Nche stated that the festival was founded with the aim of creating employment for dancers and choreographers.

“It enables dancers in semi-urban and rural towns with no access to any platforms in the country to perform. The festival serves as an SMME and tourist attraction in the Province and creates opportunities for costume designers and stage managers and photographers,” he explained.

Nche added that performers could participate in public performances, school performances, workshops and dance dialogues, featuring prominent experts and public figures.

“Accomplished dancers, choreographers, dance groups, organisations and leaders of organisations will be recognised in the awards programme to pay tribute to their contribution to the development of dance and quality of work displayed during the festival.”

Nche concluded by saying that the public was encouraged to attend, as all shows are free of charge and “family-friendly.”
