THE CONTRACTS of the workers who were caught illegally dumping have been terminated by Sol Plaatje Municipality pending an investigation.

The workers were left red-faced during a visit by Acting Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka to Kimberley last week.

Gcaleka conducted an inspection of the site where an 11-year-old boy drowned in a stormwater canal in September.

She was accompanied by Sol Plaatje executive mayor Kagisho Sonyoni.

The MEC for Roads and Public Works, Fufe Makatong, admonished the workers, while Gcaleka instructed them to clean the littered area around Gogga pump station and Riemvasmaak in their spare time.

Sol Plaatje Municipality spokesperson Thoko Riet said the workers were employed on a contract basis.

“They are not municipal employees and the executive mayor has decided to stop their contracts pending an investigation. Waste is disposed of at the municipal dumping site in a hole that is two metres by four metres deep,” said Riet.
