A GROUP of workers burnt tyres and blockaded a section of the R31 near Peter Mokaba Street on Tuesday morning after they apparently did not receive payment.

Police spokesperson Captain Bashoabile Kale said the workers were employed by a contractor who is in the process of installing toilets in Phutanang.

Kale stated that the owner of the company had explained that there was a delay in payment, but that the money had been deposited into their bank accounts.

“The company was contracted by Sol Plaatje Municipality and they had transferred payment to the contractor although there was a delay in payment. The owner of the company indicated that workers should receive payment by tonight.”

Kale added that traffic was disrupted for some time.

“An Intercape bus was also unable to pass after the road was blocked.”

He said that after the owner addressed the workers, they dispersed and cleared the road of rubble.
