As Women’s Month events commenced in the Northern Cape, the Mothibistad Regional Court handed down a life sentence to a 23-year-old man for the rape of a teenager in Gamosepa Village.

AS WOMEN’S Month events commenced in the Northern Cape, the Mothibistad Regional Court handed down a life sentence to a 23-year-old man for the rape of a teenager in Gamosepa Village.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said that on the evening of July 4, 2019, at approximately 7pm, the accused, Thato Nchaegae, and an accomplice forcefully entered the backroom where the 19-year-old victim was sleeping.

The two men took turns raping her before fleeing the scene when a family member entered the room.

Both suspects were apprehended two days later in the same village. Nchaegae pleaded guilty to the charges and received a life sentence on July 31, 2024. The trial of the second accused is still ongoing.

The provincial commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola commended Detective Constable Tholakele Majola of the Kuruman SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences unit for her unwavering dedication to the case. She emphasised that no effort would be spared to ensure that justice is served, especially during Women’s Month.
