DA DEPUTY chief whip Siviwe Gwarube will lead a march to Kimberley police station on Women’s Day to hand over a memorandum demanding that DNA testing be prioritised in the fight against gender-based violence, where delays are collapsing prosecutions.

The DA shadow minister for Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Luyolo Mpithi, the deputy shadow minister for Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Nazley Sharif, DA member of the Northern Cape provincial legislature Karabo Khakhau, national DA Women’s Network (Dawn) federal members Annerie Weber and Sally Nene, who are members of Parliament, DA provincial leader Harold McGluwa and Northern Cape Dawn representative Priscilla Isaacs will participate in the march that will proceed from the Kimberley City Hall to the Kimberley police station in Phakamile Mabija Road on Tuesday at 8.45am.

The Northern Cape Tourism Authority will meanwhile cook meals for disadvantaged women in Kimberley on Mondy in commemoration of Women’s Day.

The MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Abraham Vosloo, said the Northern Cape Tourism Authority would host a number of events during the month to pay tribute to remarkable women in the country.

“The empowerment of women is key to our nation’s advancement. Women must form a central part of efforts to build more inclusive economies. As a nation, we must move beyond shock and horror every time a woman or child is raped or killed. We must all take concrete actions to ensure safer families and safer communities,” said Vosloo.

He added that women needed to be included in the green industry and be offered opportunities in the field as entrepreneurs and women-owned businesses.

“The opportunities the green economy potentially holds for women include green production and manufacturing processes, green consumerism, micro, small and medium enterprises development and female entrepreneurship, including new professions, product development and use of green technology.”

The provincial Women’s Day event will take place in Colesberg on Tuesday, where Premier Zamani Saul will deliver the keynote address at the community hall in support of women-owned small business development.
