The De Aar Regional Court sentenced a woman to 15 years direct imprisonment after she killed her husband during an argument.
THE DE Aar Regional Court sentenced Mietjie Steenkamp to 15 years direct imprisonment for the murder of her husband.
The regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Northern Cape, Mojalefa Senokoatsane, said the incident occurred after the couple had an argument.
“On July 29, 2023, the accused and the deceased, who were husband and wife, were staying together at Vloekpoort Farm near De Aar. The couple were visited by their farm neighbours and enjoyed a drink together. It is alleged that while drinking with their neighbours, the deceased poured the wine that the group were drinking, but the accused had a problem with that. The couple started to argue. The accused then took a knife and stabbed her husband underneath his ear, and he passed on,” said Senokoatsane.
“The matter was reported to the police and the accused was arrested and charged with murder the following day on July 30, 2023. The matter was transferred to the regional court, where the accused was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment by the court.
“The NPA continues to play a pivotal role in ensuring that all perpetrators of gender-based violence (GBV) are sentenced appropriately without fear, favour or prejudice,” concluded Senokoatsane.
