The initiative seeks to provide “short-term” alleviation of hunger amongst the poor
THE “MEN on the Side of the Road” initiative was launched in Kimberley yesterday by the MEC for Social Development, Gift van Staden.
The initiative seeks to provide “short-term” alleviation of hunger amongst the poor, needy and vulnerable job seekers who are standing on the side of the road and on street corners in Kimberley on a daily basis.
Van Staden identified the need for this intervention, an extension of the Winter Relief Programme, during the Frances Baard District launch in Naborn earlier this year.
This includes the handing out of soup and bread as a relief intervention during winter.
For the rest of the duration of the Winter Relief Programme, soup and bread will be distributed twice a week at various venues, including at the Schmidtsdrift Kwik Spar, Jim Summers Hall, the corner at the Horseshoe Motel, Rhodesdene Pick * Pay, near Technical High School, and near the Indian Centre, next to the NG Meyer Building.
