Wife of murdered NC hotel owner gets 25 years behind bars

SURETHA Brits, the wife of murdered Pofadder Hotel owner Leon Brits, was sentenced to 25 years’ direct imprisonment and a further 15 years after she pleaded guilty to charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Brits, 30, was sentenced in the Upington High Court on Monday.

The body of Leon Brits, 41, was found floating in a swimming pool at one of his properties in Pofadder in October last year. He had sustained several stab wounds.

Several valuables including firearms, a cellphone, Krugerrands, polished diamonds and cash were taken from the premises during the incident.

Brits, along with two co-accused, Amantle Bareki, 24, and Enrich Williams, 34, were arrested in connection with the incident.

They were charged with murder, aggravated robbery and perjury as well as the possession of an illegal firearm.

Northern Cape National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said Brits was found guilty as changed.

“The accused was found guilty on both count one, murder, and count two, robbery with aggravating circumstances. She received a 25 years’ direct imprisonment sentence for the murder charge and a further 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances,” said Senokoatsane.

He added that the trial of the two co-accused would be separated from Brits’ trial.

“The trial of the two co-accused will start on November 22, 2021 in the Upington High Court.”
