A PLANNED water shutdown will take place in Kimberley from August 9 to 14 to allow for repairs to be completed on major leaks on the bulk water pipelines.

Sol Plaatje Municipality spokesperson Thoko Riet said on Tuesday that the shutdown would be longer than usual to allow for all the water to drain before work commences.

“Low-lying areas should still have water on August 9 while high-lying areas will experience low water pressure. The water will be interrupted from August 9 at 6pm until August 14 at 11pm. This will provide the municipality with enough time to drain the system, complete repairs and restore the water supply. JoJo tanks will be placed in various wards,” said Riet.

She added that there are major leaks on the 965 millimetre and 600 millimetre bulk water pipelines as well as at the Riverton water purification works (WPW) that directly affect water levels at the reservoirs.

“The leak next to the HLP is affecting the integrity of the new pump station. The water interruption will also present an opportunity to incorporate the repair of the major leaks on the reticulation network. There is a leak on the rising main manifold at Riverton WPW that will be repaired, while clarifier number six will be cleaned. Leaks at the Newton reservoir complex will also be attended to if time allows.”

Riet stated that bulk water meter insertion probes would be installed on the 600mm and 900mm bulk pipelines to enable water loss measurements on the bulk water supply.

“This exercise will begin to improve the water quality and water supply in the future.”
