The handle of the roller enables the barrel to be pushed or pulled over even in the roughest rural terrains, making it convenient for the beneficiaries to pull or push them while fetching and storing clean water.
THE SOUTH African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) and the South African Local Government Association (Salga) will hand over 200 hippo roller water containers to the Siyancuma Local Municipality as part of Nelson Mandela Day celebrations on July 20.
The water containers will be distributed to water scarce areas in Campbell and Griekwastad that will be able to transport 90 litres of water.
In a joint statement Samsa and Salga said the handle of the roller enabled the barrel to be pushed or pulled over even in the roughest rural terrains, making it convenient for the beneficiaries to pull or push them while fetching and storing clean water.
“This is a solution that allows the people to collect water up to five times more than they would usually collect and store it for longer periods.”
It was indicated that the hippo rollers would be handed over to the communities in two phases, with two rollers handed over to the selected beneficiaries and the rest of the rollers being handed over, once the Covid-19 lockdown regulations have been eased.
The acting CEO of Samsa Tsepiso Taoana – Mashiloane will conduct a virtual handover of the hippos on July 20 at 9am.
