SOL Plaatje Municipality has assured residents that the water is safe for consumption.

Spokesperson for Sol Plaatje Municipality Sello Matsie on Friday said that heavy rainfall experienced during November and December resulted in dams upstream reaching their respective capacities.

“The sluice gates were opened causing water levels to rise and flow at a more rapid rate causing the turbidity of the water to increase.

“The increase in turbidity caused the water to become unclear as particles do not settle at the normal rate causing a discolouring of the water.”

He added that tests were done to determine the turbidity and the required dosages.

“The dosages have been increased to ensure that the particles settle quicker resulting in clearer water. We have done so in the past and anticipated this with the continuous rain impacting the turbidity and the need for chemicals to be adjusted accordingly.

“It should be noted that the water is safe for human consumption. Should the quality be unsafe, we will immediately notify the public.”
