THE MULTI-disciplinary team executing Operation Vala Umgodi law enforcement actions in the Northern Cape recently arrested six suspects in connection with illegal mining.

Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said the actions took place on June 19 and the suspects were arrested for contravening the Illicit Mining Act and trespassing.

A team in the Frances Baard District were busy conducting routine visible patrols around the old Colville mine shaft sites in Kimberley when members nabbed five suspects, aged between 31 and 67.

Sam said the suspects were caught in the act of conducting illegal mining activities. They were arrested and mining implements were confiscated.

In the Namakwa District, at the Kooinaas mine near Kleinzee, the Vala Umgodi team were alerted by mine security about an intruder on the mine premises. The team responded and arrested the suspect.

All six suspects are slated to face legal proceedings in court.

Sam said that the police, in collaboration with stakeholders, remain committed to eradicating illegal mining in the Northern Cape. Their tireless efforts aim to safeguard both the environment and the community from the harmful effects of illicit mining operations.
