A 25-YEAR-OLD man was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment by the Upington Regional Court after he was found guilty of raping his 11-year-old sister at their home in Rosedale, Upington,

Northern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Mashay Gamieldien said the accused locked the door to his sister’s room and threatened her with a knife before raping her on November 29, 2017.

“After the incident he kept reminding her that they lived in the same house and threatened to kill her if she ever told anyone about the assault,” said Gamieldien.

She added that the complainant informed her mother about the assault on August 18, 2018 when she was unable to keep the incident a secret any longer.

“The suspect was arrested on the same day by Sergeant Lucky Malepe from the Upington Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit.”

Gamieldien said the accused was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment on Tuesday and declared unfit to possess a firearm. “His name will be recorded in the National Register for Sex Offenders.”

The provincial head of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit in the Northern Cape, Brigadier Nicky Mills, commended the investigating officer for the “meticulous” investigation of the case.

Mills warned that perpetrators who committed these sorts of heinous crimes would feel the full might of the law.
