THE UPINGTON K9 unit, together with members of Upington Highway Patrol, seized dagga with an estimated street value of more than R400,000 that was being transported on a bus.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said that during Operation Vhuthu Hawe, police officers searched a long-distance bus in Danielskuil on September 8, at about 1.45pm.

“They found 19 packets of dagga wrapped in brown cellotape, weighing 16.1 kilograms. The bus was travelling from Durban, via Bloemfontein and Kimberley to Upington. An enquiry docket was opened as no passenger could be linked with the cargo. Police investigations continue,” said Tawana.

He add that during another operation, members of Hopetown Detectives, the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit, the Visible Policing unit and the Carnarvon SAPS traced two suspects who were evading court on September 7/8.

“The suspects have failed to appear in the Hopetown and Carnarvon courts respectively on various serious and violent crimes, ranging from attempted murder, housebreaking and theft, malicious damage to properties, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, assault common, theft and transgression of the Domestic Violence Act.”

Tawana stated that during the tracing operation, two suspects were found in possession of suspected stolen goods, which included a wheelbarrow, side cutter, spotlight, three cameras, three amplifiers, 10-metre fencing wire and 12 cellphones.

“The total value of the goods found in possession of the suspects is worth more than R10,000.”

Tawana added that the suspects were expected to appear in the Hopetown and Carnarvon magistrate’s courts soon.

The acting deputy provincial commissioner for Crime Detection, Brigadier Joyce Ramaru, commended the SAPS members of Hopetown and Carnarvon for apprehending and arresting the suspects.
