THE SOL Plaatje Municipality has admitted that its workers have had their hands full with trying to manage the number of mourners during funeral services at local cemeteries.

Municipal spokesperson Thoko Riet said the number of funeral attendees at cemeteries has become overwhelming and workers are struggling to monitor and manage the situation.

“The number of mourners has often far exceeded the regulated number of 50, especially in the past few weeks after Level 3 was opened,” said Riet on Saturday.

“We have had challenges of attendees exceeding 50 at a time and also leaving the toilets in a mess. That’s when we decided to lock the toilets,” added Riet.

The municipality has pleaded with law enforcement to patrol cemeteries and to assist in controlling the number of mourners attending funeral services

“They are the only ones who can minimise the number to 50, as regulated by law,” said Riet.
