SCANLAN Street in New Park, between Bishops Avenue and Lawson Street, is set to close on Monday for a period of 10 months.
According to a notice issued by the acting municipal manager, Thami Mabija, the road will be closed from Monday, November 11 until August 31 next year due to construction work.
Municipal spokesperson Sello Matsie said yesterday that the Sol Plaatje University had been granted permission to repair Scanlan Street, which was damaged as a result of the construction of the university building.
“The road will be rehabilitated and provision will also be made for additional public parking alongside the road,” said Matsie.
He added that a raised pedestrian crossing would also be erected to allow students to traverse Scanlan Street safely. The road would also be narrowed in an effort to curb motorists from speeding.
The intersection of Phakamile Mabija and Hull Street, as well as the subway, will also be closed for maintenance for three weeks from November 18 to December 13.
The municipality is also set to clamp down on unlawful structures within the road reserves. This includes any structure, sign board, fence or rubble that is illegal.
In terms of the National Road Traffic Act (Road Sign Regulation) the municipality is allowed to remove any illegal sign or structure, while offenders may be liable for the costs and penalties.
Attention will also be focused on illegal advertising posters. In terms of the municipality’s by-laws, no posters or any other signs can be fixed on any public road, wall, fence, land, rock, tree or other natural features or to the front, frontage or roof of any building.
“Every person who wants to display a new sign or alter or add to an existing sign, must apply in writing to the municipality as well as submit the necessary plans.
“Residents who have knowingly contravened the by-law, need to lodge an application to Sol Plaatje Municipality, at the LED Division, or remove that particular sign within 21 working days. Failure to comply with these provisions will result in Section 25 being implemented and further legal steps being taken against you.”
