“No programme of the legislature will run until an agreement is reached. We are sick and tired of not being taken seriously.”

WAGE negotiations at the Northern Cape Legislature yesterday deadlocked after National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) members disrupted auditor-general presentations.

The Nehawu members who disrupted the meeting threatened to bring all legislature programmes, that were supposed to start yesterday, to a standstill until their demands are met.

The presentation of annual reports by the auditor-general was about to start when it was disrupted.

According to Nehawu branch chairperson Ntsikelelo Shandu, the disruptions were triggered by management’s “arrogance” in terms of addressing their wage negotiations, as well as an apparent lack of transparency.

Shandu said that at least six contract workers were recently dismissed and that a construction project, which is already under way, has already been “paid four times”.

“No programme of the legislature will run until an agreement is reached. We are sick and tired of not being taken seriously.

“Management continues to drag its feet in regards to fraud cases against the chief financial officer (CFO) and the secretary that date back several years already. No steps are ever taken against management,” said Shandu.

Following the disruptions, management, led by the Secretary of the Legislature, Patrick Moopelwa, met the members to discuss the issues.

By late yesterday afternoon the meeting was still under way.
